Hello Roomie! Hello Cousin!

After spending a glorious morning with my kiddos searching for a pastry, then exploring downtown Chicago, we loaded up the car and walked to meet my new roommate for lunch. Then it was back on the road to Indianapolis, Indiana to stay with Johnny's cousin Shawn. Except for a couple of crazy moments, today was a laid back easygoing kind of day. Tomorrow, we might just head straight through to Columbia, MD, and not take the last 600 miles in two days. It's almost 11 hours of driving, but we can do it! If we get out of here early enough...

From Spamville to ChiCAGOOO!

Began the morning eating donuts, then SPAM! That's right. We were in Spamville baby!

Austin, Minnesota is home to Spam! So naturally, we had to go to the Spam Museum. Fun! We were there for two hours. Trivia was fun.
Watching Monty Python is always fun.
Trying to can Spam was fun also. In the time it took me to can 6, the factory put out over 200. Guess I won't get hired. And that's okay! I am headed to Columbia anyway.

But tonight we traveled as far as Chicago, Illinois. Staying downtown, blocks from Navy Pier and Millennium Park, which we will be seeing tomorrow. And we will be meeting my new roommate, Eileen. She hooked us up with the name and location of authentic Chicago deep dish pizza. We'll meet up at lunch there tomorrow. Yummy! I hope to find a red carnation so that she may recognize me.

Isn't it all fantastic?!

Badlands, Grasslands, and Land of 10,000 Lakes

Got up and headed back west. Seemed strange to be heading the wrong direction to Maryland, but we missed seeing the Badlands yesterday. Tried to pack to much into one day without regard to any potential consequences...like starting further away then I thought, starting later than I wanted, the hail storm... The fun of traveling! It's always an adventure.

So we headed to west to the Badlands. It was only thirty miles of ground we had to cover again. There is a fantastic loop that takes a couple of hours to get through, without stopping to hike, climb, or dine. I would recommend camping in the Badlands, seeing the evening and morning light on the Badlands, and breathing it all in.

"I've been about the world a lot, and pretty much over our own country," wrote architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1935, "but I was totally unprepared for that revelation called the Dakota Bad Lands.... What I saw gave me an indescribable sense of mysterious elsewhere - a distant architecture, ethereal..., an endless supernatural world more spiritual than earth but created out of it."

Gorgeous. Badlands National Park has the eroded buttes, pinnacles, and spires and the largest protected mixed-grass prairie in the USA. Up to waist-high grasses, over 50 species, and over a hundred varieties of wildflowers. Beautiful!

Finally headed east around 11. Only stopped for gas and road side attractions...10 cent soda fountain, Lewis & Clark camp site area (not known exactly where), Corn Palace.

If I get up early in the morning, I'll go swimming. Tomorrow night...Chicago.

A Day of Sight Seeing

Got up early to leave Buffalo, WY, had a lot I wanted to see and do! However, Lily wasn't ready to get up. So we left at 8:30. That's early for Lily.

While I drove to Devils Tower, the kids caught a few more winks. Devils Tower was amazing... The legend has it 7 girls were playing near what is now Devils Tower when a bear began to chase them. The girls ran and climbed a large rock. One girl prayed to the rock for help, to save them from the bear. The rock hear her prayer and lifted to the heavens. The bear tried to climb the side, but lost its claws and fell back to earth. The girls were safe from the bear, but never made it back to earth. The rock is now a tower, and the star cluster above it are the seven girls.

After lunching on buffalo burgers, we headed to Deadwood, SD (or is it in WY?). There is gold in them there Black Hills. Lily found some. Panned for gold, watched a showdown, tooled down Main street...

Took Highway 385 to Crazy Horse Memorial Monument. Wow! And then the lightening storm! Then the hail storm! Wow!

Traveled during a rain storm to Mount Rushmore. Fortunately, the weather let up to just a sprinkle. The rock groupings on the way to Mt Rushmore is impressive, wish we could have stopped to photograph them.

Headed to Wall, SD--really to Wall Drug. A kitchie souvenir shop. Fun. Great donuts. Saw several jack-a-lopes...

Too late to see the Badlands while there was still daylight, so we headed to our hotel in Kadoka, SD. Swam in the heated pool, sat in the hot tub...

Tomorrow we may head back 35 miles to see the Badlands. Just adds two extra hours towards our goal of making it to Wisconsin tomorrow...

On the road again!

Lily immediately settled in as Jack took off drinking a quad espresso. Made it through Washington, Idaho, and Montana today. Saw the sunset in Montana. If I am lucky, I'll see the sun rise in Wyoming!

We saw lots of cattle, a few horses, antelope, a grizzly bear zoo, a Vanagon die while traveling down the interstate (parts were flying out the muffler at us!), a giant M and D on the hillside outside Missoula and Drummond, an overturned truck, a beautiful sunset in the rear view mirror, and sky-lots of sky! Know now why Montana is Big Sky Country!

Staying in Buffalo, WY tonight. Off to see some sights tomorrow...

Spokane, WA

A two day stop over in our hometown...turned into three...

There were people to see!!! Saw my mom, she made one of my favorite meals...lettuce wraps/ spring rolls. Delicious. She made another favorite food- ribs!- last week, and beef jerky for our road trip the week before. (I'll miss you too Mom!) Had dinner with Eileen & Jeff, lunch with Anne and Anita, played bridge with Sheila, Shannon and George. Visited with Sarah, Zach, Steph, and Nate....

And there were things to do! Like repack the car three times. I didn't leave enough room for the kids to bring their things, so... my winter clothes get to stay in Spokane. I might have some of my favorites sent to me, or ... I'll be back in December.

Ocean Shores, WA

Fourth of July at Ocean Shores with family...Marvelous!

Saturday, the third was sunny and warm(ish). Lily went swimming with her cousins. Flew kites. Played in the sand.

Sunday, the fourth, was windy and cold, and grey... tried to fly a kite, but had to push a van stuck in the sand out first. Barbeque dinner and a birthday celebratory dessert for Stephanie and Elizabeth set the mood for the fireworks show on the beach. Spectacular!

Monday, the fifth, was slow going. Got up to get some pics at the ocean. Flew kites again. Drew in the sand a castle complete with moat, trebuchet and dragon! Said goodbyes to some of the family...

Finally headed east about 11 AM. Made it to Seattle several hours later to meet Johnny, shop for Jack, and have a late lunch before heading to Spokane. People to see and things to do when we get to Spokane...
